Google glasses? Whatever next?!

The up and coming product that Google is launching is 'Project Glass'. Project Glass is essentially a computer that has been installed into a pair of glasses to provide an augmented reality head-mounted display. There has been a large amount of controversy over the glasses. Some technology lovers adore the fact that they will be able to have their computers with them at all times, but others speculate that there could be some real safety issues.
Google have recently uploaded a youtube video in order to promote Project Glass:

During the lecture we learnt about Ted Kaczynski, otherwise known as the Unabomber. Kaczynski created a total of 16 bombings over 20 years, killing 3 people and harming multiple others in the process, via a nationwide bombing protest contrary to modern technology. Ted Kaczynski is now facing life imprisonment in an American jail. It is clear from Kaczynski's numerous efforts to rid the world of technology that he wouldn't be pleased about Project Glass. Kaczynski has been trying to ban technology since the 1970s. Technology has completely advanced since then and google glasses could really change the way the world works.

As for technology itself, the word originally comes from the Greek word 'τεχνολογία' which means art, skill, craft and '-λογία' meaning study of-. The world 'technology' was very rarely used up until the 20th century. This was when the word took a whole different meaning by way of the dictionary. The meaning changed to 'everything we can touch', and thus that is exactly what we refer to technology as today, i.e. mobile phones, laptops, MP3 Players.

I personally found this blog post a hard one to write. I had not heard of the 'Unabomber' beforehand but it was very interesting to find out about his views on technology and wondering why he was so passionate about hating it. I do, however, understand in some sense what Kaczynski means when I refer to Project Glass. If google glasses do become popular, it will completely change how everyone communicates. Of course, Project Glass is a money making scheme, and it seems that it will work. People will buy them. But the fundamental thing that we all need to remember is that it should be us that is controlling the technology, not the other way round.
